Why Robin Roberts almost declined an interview with Barack Obama in 2012 2022-04-26 10:37:12

The Good Morning America anchor said she was told there was a possibility that Obama would announce a shift in his stance on marriage equality at the time, she told Ellen DeGeneres Monday. Roberts, who is gay, has not yet appeared in public and said she is considering turning down an interview.

“I haven’t been public yet about being gay and I was afraid I might be out of the house, and people might be wondering, ‘Why is she interviewing the president when he makes this change of heart,’” she told DeGeneres.

She continued, “And then it was kind of like a scene from the Moonstruck movie, slap, you know, go get it! You know, Robin what are you thinking? It’s not about you. This guy is going to affect countless lives.’ And at that moment I said, “I’m going to stop letting fear stop me from the things I want to do.”

Roberts, a breast cancer survivor, also spoke about her partner Amber Lane’s battle with breast cancer.

“I haven’t talked about it much,” she said, “but I’ll talk to you.” “It works really well, which is great.”
