The Falcons chose outside quarterback DeAngelo Malone of Western Kentucky with the 82nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Falcons’ pick acquired from Indianapolis for Matt Ryan.

statistics: 94 processing pieces | 17.5 TFL | Nine bags | Four Forced Sense | Four passes defense

Honours: CUSA DPOY (2019, 2021), first All-CUSA Team (2020 and 2021)

Instant analysis: Malone is the second rider the Falcons headed to on Day Two, after drafting Arnold Ipeketty in the 38th overall pick. Malone joins the lineup of positions that includes Lorenzo Carter and Adi Ogundeji. Like Carter, Malone is from the Atlanta area. He went to Cedar Grove High School.

The Western Kentucky product exemplified speed on location, particularly with its acceleration at the point of attack. He finished his college career #1 in school history in sacks and #2 in tackles. Malone could gain a few extra pounds of muscle mass, but over time he could become a fixture on Dean Beez’s chart. – Tory Meselhani

What’s Next: The Hawks no longer had any other day two picks, and traded their day three pick (#114) for a chance to take Arnold Ipeketty in the second round. They now have three picks on the final day of the NFL Draft, with numbers 151, 190 and 213. It’s hard to expect much of an immediate impact from later-round picks outside of the specials, but the Hawks will have a chance to boost their depth of the chart with young talent. There are plenty of examples of late talents who have become regular contributors to the Falcons programme, including Grady Jarrett, Foy Olokun and Russell Gage. The best available player becomes the primary strategy here, although offensive and defensive lines remain strong draft options. Another possibility comes into play: Are the hawks crafting a gambler? – Scott Berg
