Boston (CBS) – West Roxbury’s father was defeated. He is tired of headaches and the chase – trying to get his special needs children to school safely.
“It doesn’t matter who you call. Nothing gets done. All I want—what most normal people want—is what’s best for their children,” Barry Weiner said.
Barry isn’t even asking for the best ride – but rather a ride. A wheelchair bus shows up just in time to pick up Andy and Dan to and from Perkins School for the Blind.
“I pull my kids out of bed at 5:40 a.m. to get ready for the bus at 7 a.m. I ended up calling at 7:10. There was no bus or driver. Again,” he said frustrated. This was only the third issue this week.
Barry has to wait for the transmission line to arrive, which may take some time. The transportation line is called the bus company. The school is private. Boys in Boston IEPs. It’s a giant phone game. When there is no flight, they are not communicated clearly and quickly.
“He was in school. He’s wearing diapers. He’s drenched in urine because there’s no bus. He’s nonverbal and uses a wheelchair,” Barry said of son Andy.
In a statement to WBZ, Boston Public Schools wrote:
“We hear this family’s frustration and want to do everything we can to rectify this situation and improve our communication with them. BPS Transportation has faced persistent driver shortage issues throughout the 2021-22 school year. This shortage is due to the ongoing shortage of bus drivers nationwide, and high absenteeism rates Employees due to the impact of COVID-19, daily attendance challenges. Our system currently has more than 30 positions open for bus drivers. As a result, relatively few daily trips this year were driverless due to lack of drivers. We are working urgently to fill driver vacancies So that families don’t have to deal with these issues.”
Barry has been begging for a change for years. But he would do anything for his three children.
“It’s what I live for, basically,” he said. “This is what I live and breathe. That is why I am here on this planet to take care of them and take care of them.”
