Miami (CBS Miami) – The sarcasm started at the beginning of the school year and escalated.
A boy tells a student that she “looked like a school bomber.” A girl tells her to “kill herself”. A mother of a 15-year-old girl at Mater Lakes Academy said her daughter was bullied throughout the school year and despite being reported, said the school did not address the issue.
She says she reached breaking point on Monday when her daughter came home and showed her a picture of a message written on the bathroom wall saying, “The world is better without you.”
The mother, who asked us to keep her identity private, says she reported the letter to the principal but was still there on Thursday.
“It’s not acceptable,” she said.
Mater Lakes Academy is an independent school and is not governed by the Miami-Dade School District, CBS4 went to the school for answers.
CBS4 was told that the director was out of the country and that the deputy director was in a meeting.
Later, a representative from the Florida Charter School Alliance contacted CBS4 to say that an investigation was immediately opened into the bathroom wall incident and that the letter had been removed but “republished”.
“The school speaks to the students and bullying is taken seriously. We were told that based on what the investigation reveals, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.
The mother who reported the bullying said she hoped it would lead to a zero-tolerance of bullying. “Without that, it’s only going to get worse,” she said.
