After all the chatter leading up to Thursday night, there was only one quarterback player selected in the first round of the 2022 draft.
Kenny Beckett will just have to use a different door in the building when he comes to his new football facility, as the Steelers drafted him for 20th overall.
As head coach Mike Tomlin said at a post-selection press conference, “[W]I’ve flown around the world – or at least the US – here in the past several months, man, just exploring and researching. And that’s funny, we ended up with a guy from the neighbours.”
Tomlin described Beckett’s “high floor” as the intangibles of the quarterback, anticipation, and accuracy “clear and consistent when examining his tape”.
“He’ll definitely have a chance to compete,” Tomlin said.
Since Pete shares a building with the Steelers, Tomlin noted that he is very familiar with Beckett already.
“I’ve known him for several years now,” said Tomlin, “whether it’s in the parking lot or what you have, wish him the best of luck for the big game of the week, write the things you love, in a very natural way, like I’ve done with those who preceded him.”
Now Tomlin will coach Beckett for the foreseeable future.
