CHARLOTTE – Rep. Madison Cawthorne was cited as having possession of a handgun at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Tuesday morning, police said.
According to the TSA, a 9mm handgun was discovered in a bag at Checkpoint D, and TSA officials called Charlotte Mecklenburg Police.
An image obtained by Channel 9 shows that a loaded Staccato C2 was found at the airport on Tuesday.
Officers confirmed the rifle was a Cawthorne and said he cooperated with police.
Cawthorn was cited for possession of a dangerous weapon on city property, a city by Charlotte ordinance.
The CMPD said it seized the firearm, which is normal procedure.
This isn’t the first time a Cawthorne pistol has been discovered at an airport. In February 2021, the TSA found a 9mm pistol in Cawthorne’s handbag at Asheville Regional Airport. Cawthorne did not face any criminal charges in the incident.
TSA found 106 handguns at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in 2021.
A Cawthorn spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
