New Orleans police say a 3-year-old girl was fatally shot inside a home in the city’s French Quarter, and detectives were questioning her teenage siblings.

NEW ORLEANS – A 3-year-old girl was fatally shot inside a home in New Orleans’ French Quarter Tuesday afternoon, and detectives were questioning her teenage siblings, police said.

During a brief press conference, Capt. Hans Gunther, Commander of the Eighth Police District, said investigators did not know if the shooting was accidental.

He said the little girl and her siblings were staying in the house where the shooting took place. “I am not entirely sure if this is their permanent residence,” he said.

Gunther said a pistol was found.

He said the child died at the university medical center, which houses the regional trauma center.

The shooting took place just before 4 p.m. on Burgundy Street, a residential area and neighborhood bars and other shops two blocks from Bourbon Street.
