A child is hospitalized after being attacked by a wolf at Huntington Beach; Searching for an animal 2022-04-29 18:28:17

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (KABC) – A young girl was in the hospital Friday morning after she was attacked by a wolf in Huntington Beach, prompting a search for the animal.

The accident occurred just north of the pier around 9:45 p.m. Thursday, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department. When the officers arrived, they found the injured girl, but it was not clear who she was with at the time of the attack.

The unidentified girl, who was not released, was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police say officers shot a coyote on the beach after the attack, which happened Thursday night. One wolf was found dead on the beach Friday morning near PCH and Goldenwest Street, but authorities do not believe it was involved in the attack.

Although the location of the animal that attacked the girl has not been determined, the police expect to find it dead due to its injuries.

Gary Johncon says he spotted the wolf before he chased after the victim.

“All the way here was soaked and then back,” Juncon said. “We saw it and all of a sudden this family walked in and there was a kid on the floor, and then five minutes later we went back, and we all huddled around the kid. Apparently the kid got like a piece.”

Area residents say coyote sightings are not uncommon and police say they have recently increased their trapping efforts across the city.

“It’s scary when they’re close to you because they’re bigger and you don’t have any defense,” said Diana Broderick of Huntington Beach.

She encourages beachgoers to always be in the know.
